Abstract

This qualitative and quantitative study focused on determining the preferred language for teaching and learning the mother tongue in the district of San Miguel at Surigao del Sur. It focused on finding out the preferred language for teaching and learning the mother tongue according to the respondents: pupils, teachers, and parents; problems faced by respondent teachers and parents in teaching and learning the mother tongue; and the appropriate teaching material to be developed from the outcome of the study. The complete enumeration sampling was used in the selection of respondent teachers who teach the mother tongue in the first to third grades of elementary schools in the district of San Miguel. Pupils and parent respondents were identified through convenient sampling. It was found in the study that the preferred language of the respondent pupils, teachers, and parents for teaching and learning the subject of mother tongue is the San Miguelnon language. It became a problem for them to use the Cebuano/Binisaya language as a medium for teaching and learning the mother tongue subject because it is contrary to their first language.
