Abstract

This study describes and analyzes the phonological structure of Surigaonon-Cantilan in Surigao del Sur. It applied a descriptive qualitative design. Data were obtained from informants who were legitimate citizens in the towns of Carrascal, Cantilan, Madrid, Carmen, and Lanuza, which were the scope of the study. It was discovered that the Surigaonon-Cantilan language has six (6) vowel phonemes: /i/, /e/, /ǝ/, /a/, /o/ and /u/; And seventeen (17) consonant phonemes: /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /s/, /h/, /m/, /n/, /η /, /l/, /r/, /y/, /w/, /ˀ/ and /j/; These phonemes are used at the front, middle and back of Cantilangnun words except for /j/ which has no use at the end of the word. The diphthongs /aw/, /iw/, /ay/, /oy/, and /uy/ are also contained in words that may appear on the first and last syllable of the word. Twenty-two (22) clusters were also discovered in the language studied: br, by, dy, dj, dr, dy, gr, gw, hy, kl, kr, kw, ky, ly, pl, pr, pw, py, sw, sy, tr and ty, and the minimal pair is also visible in this language. Four stresses in Filipino were identified in the study: gentle ‘malumay’, grave ‘malumi’, fast ‘mabilis’, and circumflex ‘maragsa’.
